Tack sharp wide open (amazing for portraits), superb resolving power even on a 5D Mark III, and the Hybrid IS. (You can probably find similar combinations of things that will let you use Zeiss microscope lenses on your camera as well.) Forget about depth of field, though - there isn't any. This 100mm 2.8 IS Macro is just crazy. The 12.5mm lens will let you get close-ups of the eyes of the things that live on the eyes of the insects you're talking about. They're used on a bellows, and you can get adapters that will couple the Minolta MC/MD mount lenses/bellows to a Canon EF-mount camera. They are actually microscope-type lenses, available at 12.5mm and 25mm focal lengths, IIRC. If you want to get really big and don't mind fishing around in the used equipment and odds-and-sods end of the photo market, a really interesting option would be the Minolta micro lenses. The cheap option for this strategy would be to reverse-mount a wide-angle lens on extension tubes or bellows. Canon's answer is a "reverse zoom" (the 1:1-5 65MP-E), which is essentially a zoom lens with the far end of the lens anchored in place (instead of the end at the flange, as with a normal zoom) reducing the focal length of the lens increases the magnification at the film/sensor plane. At sizes of 1:1 or smaller, a longer lens gives you additional working space at little cost, but as the magnification gets bigger, the amount of extra room required behind the lens becomes an extreme penalty. Somewhat counter-intuitively, if you want really huge magnification while keeping the camera assembly to a manageable size, you need to go to a wider lens, not a longer lens. As has been mentioned already, one or more extension tubes will get you closer than the macro lens by itself can. Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion: This bills itself as a real time 4X or RT4X game, which is well outside of my normal complexity wheelhouse.Of course, back then, it was all clustered into a single afternoon/evening session on a Saturday night. I recall that being roughly how long it took me to win the original when I first rented it. Oddly, when I accomplished this, my Steam play time for the game only sat just shy of 5 hours. It took me months of occasional play sessions, but I did it. The Disney Afternoon Collection: Duck Tales: I finally finished this game.Fortunately, there is still some bonus content to complete. I finally got past it and realized that that was the end of the main adventure. Lara Croft GO: The last time I tried this, I was still stuck on the final boss creature.Chip’s Challenge 1: Going back to the vintage Windows 3.1 days with this one.Defense Technica: Starting the year off strong with an old tower defense game that I have yet to master.I have repeatedly tried to get into this game in the 6 years since I bought it upon release at full price amid gushing reviews and now I finally get it. My most notable personal gaming achievement this year was that I finally understood the game FTL. It’s strange, the arbitrary goals we set for ourselves. And so it came to pass that I secured all of 78 points for the year. I figured the lowest effort correction to this situation would be to scrub through my game spreadsheet and find games which had been added for which I already had cover art scanned. This couldn’t be allowed to stand! I have data contributed every year since I joined in 2005. I didn’t even have any game acquisitions to blog about! Slow year, indeed. If nothing else, at least it gives me something to write about on this blog. His final, grand waterlily cycle consumed him more than 20 years. Monet’s great contribution to art was to capture the effects of light, the momentary impressions of atmospheric conditions, and to produce works in series. They are painters of modern life – the ports, train stations and public places of modern Paris, as well as intimate scenes of daily existence – and they revolutionised the ways artists worked: often out-of-doors, using portable easels and paint in tubes, and holding independent exhibitions, away from the Salon. Monet and the other Impressionists approached art and their subject matter in completely new ways. What makes Monet’s paintings still so intriguing after 150 years? ![]() The Musée Marmottan Monet in Paris launched a variant exhibition in 2014, to celebrate the 80th anniversary of its opening, and to celebrate new research into Impression, sunrise this version of the show, especially prepared for Canberra, has come about relatively quickly, and is Director Nick Mitzevich’s first major project at the National Gallery. How long has the exhibition been in planning? The exhibition also features the National Gallery’s own Haystacks 1890-newly cleaned of the varnish that impacted its colours-and Waterlilies c 1914–17. We are so fortunate to be able to show it here in Canberra! Other key paintings include the Turners, those by Monet’s teacher Eugene Boudin, as well as Monet’s masterpieces of his middle and late periods: The Tuileries 1876 The Pont de l’Europe. This work rarely leaves its home in Paris and has never travelled the southern hemisphere. Obviously the most important painting in the show to see is Impression, sunrise. Can you tell us some absolute must-see pieces? There will be 60 works in the exhibition. Monet and his contemporaries are now some of the most important, and most-loved, artists of all time! This exhibition was such a shock to many of the art critics: the group was derisively named Impressionists, as in they hadn’t even bothered to finish their works and that they were only an impression or sketch of the subject. Monet’s painting of the Port of Le Havre at sunrise which he named Impression, sunrise, was exhibited at the First Impressionist exhibition in Paris in 1874. What is impressionism and how did this movement come about? The second half of the exhibition demonstrates how Monet continued to refine these ideas for the rest of his life, ending with his famous Waterlilies series. The exhibition includes works by master landscape artists who came before Monet, who shaped the ways he looked at the French landscape and applied paint to canvas. Monet and his seminal painting, Impression, sunrise 1872, is the heart of this exhibition: it shows how the young artist came to paint the work, his influences and, in turn, his impact on subsequent generations.
